 Iain
Matthews was born Ian Matthews MacDonald on June 16th, 1946 in Scunthorpe,
Lincolnshire, England. His music career began in the mid 60's as
the vocalist with the surf band "Pyramid". In 1967 he
was recruited to sing with "Fairport Convention" alongside
fellow folk legends Sandy Denny and Richard Thompson. His next group,
Matthews Southern Comfort, scored a number one hit single in England
with Joni Mitchell's Woodstock.
By
late 1970 Ian Matthews began a solo career and released a series
of critically acclaimed albums for various record companies. In
1978 he released "Stealing Home" which went on to become
a certified gold record and spawned the top ten U.S. single "Shake
It". By the early 80's Matthew's solo career was floundering
and group efforts with his band Hi Fi feared no better. By 1985
Ian retired as a performer and took a job in the record industry.
In
1988 Iain's (now spelled Iain to reflect his Gaelic roots) short
lived retirement ended with a legendary concert at the Bottom Line
club in New York. He resumed his solo career, again to great acclaim.
Throughout the 90's Matthews released numerous commercial CDs along
with two series of Cds aimed at his ever fanatical fan base. With
the live performance market drying up in the U.S., Iain relocated
to the Netherlands.
Iain
Matthews continues his stellar solo career as well as working as
a member of the band "Plainsong". Along with Dutch guitarist
Ad Vanderveen and Texas songstress Eliza Gilkyson, Iain is also
part of the songwriting collective "More Than A Song".
UTR Records, the licensing branch of Binky records, signed both
Iain Matthews and Ad Vanderveen in late 2002. February 2003 saw
the U.S. release of "More Than A Song".
